Numerical Simulation of the December 26, 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami using a Boussinesq model

چکیده
We provide preliminary calculations of wave generation, propagation and inundation for the December 26, 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Calculations are based on Boussinesq model FUNWAVE and are carried out on a Cartesian grid with spatial resolution comparable to 2 minutes in latitude and longitude. Initial conditions are provided by the TOPICS model and are based on estimates of ground motion in four separate source regions. The model is seen to provide reasonable predictions of runup and inundation at a number of sites where estimates based on field observations have been made available.

Numerical Simulation of the December 26, 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami using a Higher-order Boussinesq Model
Based on differences in seafloor morphology and information about the earthquake, we develop four separate sources for the December 26, 2004 tsunami, along a 1200 km long rupture zone. We trigger these sources in a time sequence spanning 331 s, to perform a numerical simulation of the tsunami, with a higher-order Boussinesq model. We find reasonable agreement of numerical results with a few obs...
متن کاملModeling the 26 December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami: Case study of impact in Thailand
[1] The devastating 26 December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami stressed the need for assessing tsunami hazard in vulnerable coastal areas. Numerical modeling is but one important tool for understanding past tsunami events and simulating future ones. Here we present a robust simulation of the event, which explains the large runups and destruction observed in coastal Thailand and identifies areas vuln...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation of the December 26, 2004: Indian Ocean Tsunami
The December 26, 2004 tsunami is one of the most devastating tsunami in recorded history. It was generated in the Indian Ocean off the western coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia at 0:58:53 (GMT) by one of the largest earthquake of the century with a moment magnitude of Mw = 9.3. In the study, we focus on a best-fitted tsunami source for tsunami modeling based on geophysical and seismological ...
متن کاملDispersive Study on Tsunami Propagation of The Indian Ocean Tsunami , 26 December 2004
The Indian Ocean Tsunami (IOT) 26 December 2004 is the most devastating tsunami recorded in history causing over than 200,000 deaths and millions homeless people, uncounted property and infrastructure damaged along the coasts of Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives. Many lessons can be inferred for this case, one of interesting phenomena is the dispersive effect on tsunami propagati...
متن کاملOn the weak impact of the 26 December Indian Ocean tsunami on the Bangladesh coast
The 26 December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami damaged severely most of the Gulf of Bengal’s coastal areas, but the coast of Bangladesh which stands at the edge of an extraordinarily extended continental shelf. This latter feature has been built through huge discharges of river sediments along the Brahmaputra and Ganges rivers. As a result of this enormous discharge, another interesting feature of t...
